When buying shoes for children, comfort is more important than fashion. Things to look for include foot room, foot support, cushioning, breathability, and flexibility. Children should be able to wiggle their toes, but not too much that the shoe shifts around. Shoes should also provide proper foot support and cushioning so that the feet remain comfortable for hours. Breathability is also important and can help keep the feet from sweating too much. Finally, flexibility is essential because children move around a lot, and the shoes they wear must be able to handle their movement. Parents are also advised to examine their children’s shoes every few months to see if they still fit properly.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Robert Hope of Riverside Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Many dancers focus primarily on stretching out tight muscles in their feet before they dance. While this is important, it is also recommended that dancers stretch their calves and make sure that they have good flex and pointe in their feet. Using an exercise band while seated on the floor is considered to be a great way to both stretch and workout your foot and calf muscles. Just be sure to stretch under the guidance of an instructor. If you are feeling pain however, be sure to stop exercising and stretching and see a podiatrist who can help your foot heal so you can get back out on the dance floor.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Dr. Robert Hope from Riverside Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

How to Get the Perfect Shoe for Your Feet

It is important that you get a proper fit for any type of athletic shoe you want to purchase. You may find it helpful to go to a specialty store that has workers who can measure your feet correctly in order to make sure your new shoes fit. Another tip is to avoid looking for the cheapest option, because cheaper shoes often equate to worse quality. When you go to a specialty store, the staff will likely ask you what activity you plan to participate in. This is because there are different types of shoes that correspond to different activities. Walking shoes should be worn if you plan on going for a walk, and running shoes should be worn if you want to go on a run.

Finding a properly-fitting shoe is important in reducing injuries and preventing foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Dr. Robert Hope from Riverside Podiatry. Our doctor will treat your foot needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

A common concern when it comes to foot health, having properly fitted shoes can help prevent injuries to the foot. Out feet affect our posture and gait, which in turn affects the biomechanics and overall bodily structure. With 33 joints, 26 bones, and over 100 ligaments, the potential for serious injury is much greater than one realizes. Although the feet cease growth in adulthood, they still change shape as they mature. Here are some factors to consider when it comes to investing in proper fitting shoes:

  • Be sure the shoes fit correctly right away
  • Ensure the ball of your foot fits comfortably in the widest portion of the shoes
  • Even though they may look fashionable, improper fitting shoes can either create adverse conditions or exacerbate existing ones you may already have
  • Walk along a carpeted surface to ensure the shoes comfortably fit during normal activity

Keeping in mind how shoes fit the biomechanics of your body, properly-fitting shoes are vitally important. Fortunately, it is not difficult to acquire footwear that fits correctly. Be sure to wear shoes that support the overall structure of your body. Do your feet a favor and invest in several pairs of well-fitted shoes today.

Dealing with Foot Pain

If you want to start taking care of your feet, the first step is to make sure you are wearing shoes that fit you properly. Wearing improper footwear can cause a lot of damage to your feet, and leave you in a lot of pain. If you are experiencing pain in your feet, you should be careful not to ignore it. A common source of foot pain is plantar fasciitis, but this condition can be avoided by stretching your feet and avoiding standing for long periods of time. Another tip you should follow if you want healthy feet is to get routine pedicures. Not only do pedicures help your feet feel more relaxed, but they also help them stay strong and healthy.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact Dr. Robert Hope from Riverside Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.
